Frequently Asked Questions

Can I stay while my pet is being groomed?

We discourage it purely because we find if it is just us working with the animal, they relax and bond with us more rather than just trying to run to you.

Do you have sensitive skin shampoos?

How long will my pet need to stay?

Generally a 3 hour turnaround, but your pet is welcome to stay all day.

Do you sedate dogs?

Here at Lara's Shear 'n' Shed we never sedate dogs. We do sedate our cats with the assistance of Orange Vets located next door.

Why does it costs more to have your pet groomed than your own hair cut?

  1. You sit nice and still for your hair cut

  2. You don’t bite or scratch your hairdresser

  3. Your hairdresser doesn’t include a pedicure and manicure

  4. Your hairdresser only trims the hair on your head – not your entire body

  5. Your hairdresser doesn’t wash and clean your butt

  6. You don’t go for weeks without brushing or weashing your hair

  7. Your hairdresser doesn’t clean and check your ears

  8. The likelihood of you pooping in the hair salon is hopefully pretty slim

  9. Your hairdresser doesn’t have to give you a sanitary trim

  10. Your hairdresser doesn’t have to remove the gunk from your eyes

This may be funny but it is true! Grooming a dog or cat simply takes more time, patience and courage then cutting human hair!

The cost of your pet grooming services is determined the breed of the dog, what you want done, the condition of the coat, and the pet’s behaviour. All pets are unique. As much as you can try to give us the best description your dog, his hair, his behaviour and what you want done over the phone, without meeting your dog, we cannot give you an exact price over the phone – Only an approximation.

Our services for dogs by Lara’s Shear ‘n’ Shed include nails, dog bathing, cat bathing, short clips and our speciality breed clips and longer clips.  The breed clips and longer clips are hand scissored which requires years of experience, skill and patience. These clips are more expensive because of the time and expertise required to make your dog look beautiful.

All dogs require us to bath them prior to any grooming and clipping so that we can dry the hair for the best finish possible. Some dogs, especially our older dogs, find standing for extended periods to be groomed can be uncomfortable. We use supporting handling techniques to overcome this problem. No sedation is ever used on any dog.

We won’t because it hurts them terribly and is not fair to your dog. We always try our best to save as much of the dog’s coat as possible, and use a deep conditioner that works to detangle the hair. If the dogs’ hair is matted, the hair is already damaged and will not brush out to healthy looking or feeling hair. If the dog has a slight mat that can sometimes be removed and we can continue on with the groom.

My pets fur is all matted but I don't want it clipped off. Why won't you just brush it out?

Why do I need to regulary groom my dog?

In order to maintain a manageable and healthy dog coat, we recommended that you have your dog groomed every 4–6 weeks. The non-shedding dog breeds such as Poodles, Bichons, Shih Tzus, Terriers and Lhasa Apsos, can easily become painfully matted if not properly bathed, groomed and maintained.

Some dog breeds that have shorter, shedding coats can wait 8 -10 weeks between our grooming appointments, as long as they are brushed regulary by you at home. If you leave it too long between your appointments with us it could be come more expensive for you each visit as it takes us longer to rectify the coat. Try to keep your dog as beautiful in between appointments with constant grooming.  We will happily discuss the best regime and best length for their unique style.
